St. Luke's Medical Tower rose as the Texas Medical Center's tallest building as the new millennium began. At 34 stories from tip to the bottom of Basement Level 3, foundation cost savings were hailed to be over $1 million by combining the temporary excavation system with the permanent basement wall and using spread foundations to support the tower.

Another innovative "first" by Ulrich Engineers, Inc. was the successful combining of foundation systems. Drilled pier soldier piles served the dual role of supporting exterior column loads and as the basement wall. Interior structural loads were supported by combined footings, spread footings, and mini-mats. The spread footings acted as kicker blocks and permanent foundations.
